Maggot guts help police identify body

Police in Mexico recently discovered a body burned beyond recognition in a remote patch of woods just off a country road. The hands and feet were missing. There was no physical evidence nearby except a school graduation ring. The body was in such bad shape that investigators couldn't even determine the gender. The only soft tissue available for genetic analysis was a burned fragment of liver, but attempts to get a DNA profile from this bit of evidence proved futile.

However, forensic investigators were able to find useful genetic material in an unusual place ? inside the guts of the maggots infesting the corpse's neck and face.

"This is the first reported case of analysis of human DNA isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of maggots used to identify a victim in a criminal case," a group of researchers from Monterrey, Mexico, wrote in a report this month in the Journal of Forensic Sciences.

    4. Maggot guts help police identify body

Ten days before the body was found, a man claimed his daughter had been abducted. He recognized the ring, but couldn't tell if the badly burned corpse was his daughter. The investigators took a DNA sample from the man and then looked at the gut contents of three blowfly maggots from the dead body. They found traces of human DNA in the bugs' stomachs. With this evidence, they found that the victim was female, and they were able to run a paternity test, which came back with a 99.68-percent match to the man, confirming that this was his abducted daughter.

Maggots are commonly used to construct timelines for crimes, as larval development can indicate how long a victim has been dead. Attracted by gases escaping from a decomposing corpse, blowflies often show up within minutes of death, infesting parts of the body and laying their eggs there. It's the larvae that result from these eggs that serve as a timestamp; depending on the temperature they develop from egg to winged adult in a matter of 10 or so days.

But the researchers say this grim case shows how else the insects might be used as clues.

"If maggots are encountered in association with human remains, investigators could utilize this approach if the extraction of DNA from other sources is not possible," wrote the researchers, led by Marta Ortega-Mart?nez, of Universidad Aut?noma de Nuevo Le?n.

Video: Jimmy Hoffa buried in Detroit backyard?

>>> it is one of the most famous and enduring american mysteries, what happened to jimmy hoffa , the teamster's boss who went missing without a trace in 19 # 5. well, now investigators are back on the case just outside detroit. and nbc's john yang is there.

>> reporter: could these six-foot cylinders with dark, muddy water , six feet in diameter, hold the answer to the mystery of jimmy hoffa ? this man said he saw the body buried years ago, and where ground-penetrating radar showed something, two feet deep.

>> we're just doing our job, we had credible information and had to follow through with it.

>> reporter: police said when he disappeared in 1975 , there was a different shed, the floor was dirt, covered with concrete. it is about 20 miles from where hoffa was last seen, apparently lured by two mob figures, since then, he has been famous, and his organized crime ties and federal court convictions in the '60s. jack nicoleson portrayed him in the 1992 movie, hoffa .

>> he was a real enemy of american society and a real threat to this country.

>> reporter: legends also surround his death, some saying his final resting place has been a giant stadium in new jersey, or detroit's center.

>> the stories are huge.

>> reporter: and so is the search, in 2003 , investigators dug under a swimming pool in northern michigan , in 2004 , they ripped up the floor of a detroit house . and in 2006 , they tore down a michigan horse barn. each time, they found nothing. investigators hope they will know next week whether the 37-year search for hoffa could finally be over. john yang , nbc news, roseville, michigan.

Decision making and negotiation part 2: M&As & fund-raising ...

Posted 27th September 2012 in Articles | Register to comment

Jean?Louis Roux Dit Buisson

Foro Ventures

In part two, Jean-Louis Roux Dit Buisson explores the decision-making and negotiations involved in M&As and fund-raising.

(Continued from ?Decision making and negotiation part one: technology licensing?)

Today we are faced with the price to be paid for an acquisition. Literature reports that about 70% of all M&As projects do not perform as expected1 and a recent study performed on IPOs in the Swiss biotech industry reports that 90% of them lose the money after a year2. Additionally, Facebook?s recent fate could be a cruel example of what managers can be induced to when they do not understand the mechanics of valuations, or do not exert their governance duty properly.

profit-loss-statementFigure 1: An example of a company?s profit and loss statement (P&L)

As an example, say you own the company, whose P&L is reported in figure 1, and your Planning and Acquisition VP comes to you with an acquisition project that shows the same profile as yours. Revenues are planned to grow at 3%, and costs to be maintained at their current level over the planning period of 10 years, as approved during the last budgeting round, and subsequent strategic review.

Negotiation dynamics

?Never invest in a business you do not understand.?

Warren Buffet

Bidding time comes around and your Planning and Acquisition VP presents her recommendations to the board. She argues that your company should pay a premium of 30% over the ongoing P/E in order to convince the shareholders to sell, and to buy the approval of the existing management team who fears for its future.

?

?Literature reports that about 70% of all M&As projects do not perform as expected??

?

The board asks how this premium over market estimates can be justified, and the VP answers with the traditional arguments: post acquisition we are going to increase the sales by 5% instead of 3% p.a, then we shall reduce costs by 15%, and we estimate that the terminal value ought to be included in the valuation. All these measures will help raise the company value from ?125 to ? 315, and thus we recommend paying the 30% premium over current P/E.

The board nods positively, except one non-operating director who says:

?Well, why don?t we first try these measures on our own business, as it seems so easy to grow sales 5% instead of 3% (a 66% increase by the way), to reduce costs across the board by 15% [how can sales grow faster with a marketing and sales budget reduced by 15%] and sell the company at 3 times sales down the road, when our current P/E is 7.1, equivalent to 1.1 times sales??

?example-company-negotiation-tableFigure 2: An example of a company?s negotiation table

And then he pulls out a table (such as figure 2) showing the impact of any of these measures on the NPV and EBITDA, asking each time, why can?t we do it on our own business first?

Deciding upon a proper thinking process

When asked by the president of the board what he would suggest, the non-operating director proposes a value creating plan based on sound analysis of Pareto effects on contribution and gross margins, threshold effects on marketing and promotion expenses, and redundant positions in the G&A sector.

value-premium-priceFigure 3: Computed with Excel add-ons, the blue surface is proportional to the probability of being in the money, 0.2 in this case

When these measures are diligently implemented using the proper evaluation tools, the computed value of the targeted company can be increased.

?

?Companies acquired for their development pipelines raise the additional issue of sharing value and risk.?

?

However, in our case the probability of adding value over the premium price paid is less than 0.2. This is highlighted in figure 3, above.

The case of development companies: fund raising

Companies acquired for their development pipelines raise the additional issue of sharing value and risk. It might be in the interest of the targeted company to get a higher share of the expected value of the pipeline, while earning this share as milestones are achieved.

value-shares-tableFigure 4: An example showing development outcomes

The tools and methodologies available to finance directors allow for developing negotiation tables with investors, whereby the dilution linked to additional rounds of financing can be modeled based on hypothesis for development outcomes, as highlighted in the example above in figure 4.

Conclusion

When dealing with value driving issues such as M&As or fund raising, modern evaluation tools, methodologies and approaches bring valuable insights to the boards keen on exerting their governance responsibilities.

Overreliance on common sense hypothesis fed in formulas whose rationale has been forgotten even by the key players, might partly explain the important number of failures in M&A as well as in investment activities.

Finally, always ask yourself if it is so easy to plan for that acquisition target, why is it so difficult for us to implement in our own activities?

Extreme climate change linked to early animal evolution

Thursday, September 27, 2012

An international team of scientists, including geochemists from the University of California, Riverside, has uncovered new evidence linking extreme climate change, oxygen rise, and early animal evolution.

A dramatic rise in atmospheric oxygen levels has long been speculated as the trigger for early animal evolution. While the direct cause-and-effect relationships between animal and environmental evolution remain topics of intense debate, all this research has been hampered by the lack of direct evidence for an oxygen increase coincident with the appearance of the earliest animals ? until now.

In the Sept. 27 issue of the journal Nature, the research team, led by scientists at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, offers the first evidence of a direct link between trends in early animal diversity and shifts in Earth system processes.

The fossil record shows a marked increase in animal and algae fossils roughly 635 million years ago. An analysis of organic-rich rocks from South China points to a sudden spike in oceanic oxygen levels at this time ? in the wake of severe glaciation. The new evidence pre-dates previous estimates of a life-sustaining oxygenation event by more than 50 million years.

"This work provides the first real evidence for a long speculated change in oxygen levels in the aftermath of the most severe climatic event in Earth's history ? one of the so-called 'Snowball Earth' glaciations," said Timothy Lyons, a professor of biogeochemistry at UC Riverside.

The research team analyzed concentrations of trace metals and sulfur isotopes, which are tracers of early oxygen levels, in mudstone collected from the Doushantuo Formation in South China. The team found spikes in concentrations of the trace metals, denoting higher oxygen levels in seawater on a global scale.

"We found levels of molybdenum and vanadium in the Doushantuo Formation mudstones that necessitate that the global ocean was well ventilated. This well-oxygenated ocean was the environmental backdrop for early animal diversification," said Noah Planavsky, a former UCR graduate student in Lyons's lab now at CalTech.

The high element concentrations found in the South China rocks are comparable to modern ocean sediments and point to a substantial oxygen increase in the ocean-atmosphere system around 635 million years ago. According to the researchers, the oxygen rise is likely due to increased organic carbon burial, a result of more nutrient availability following the extreme cold climate of the 'Snowball Earth' glaciation when ice shrouded much of Earth's surface.

Lyons and Planavsky argued in research published earlier in the journal Nature that a nutrient surplus associated with the extensive glaciations may have initiated intense carbon burial and oxygenation. Burial of organic carbon ? from photosynthetic organisms ? in ocean sediments would result in the release of vast amounts of oxygen into the ocean-atmosphere system.

"We are delighted that the new metal data from the South China shale seem to be confirming these hypothesized events," Lyons said.

The joint research was supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the NASA Exobiology Program, and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. Besides Lyons and Planavsky, the research team includes Swapan K. Sahoo (first author of the research paper) and Ganqing Jiang (principal investigator of the study) of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Brian Kendall and Ariel D. Anbar of Arizona State University; Xinqiang Wang and Xiaoying Shi of the China University of Geosciences (Beijing); and UCR alumnus Clint Scott of United States Geological Survey.

Hungarian opposition radio wins court case

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) ? An opposition radio station in Hungary won a court ruling Wednesday in its bid for a broadcast license, but that was still no guarantee it could survive government efforts to control the media.

The Budapest Court of Appeals rejected a decision by the country's Media Council invalidating Klubradio's bid for a broadcast license, the latest in a long line of legal victories for the news-and-talk radio station.

Yet despite the rulings, the Media Council ? whose members were elected by parties led by Prime Minister Viktor Orban ? has repeatedly sought new ways to keep the station from gaining a long-term contract.

"The media authorities ... are capable of (doing) anything to ensure that Klubradio does not get a broadcast frequency or that if it does, it's under the worst possible conditions," said Gabor Polyak, a university professor and director of Mertek Media Monitor, an independent media watchdog.

The decision was repealed grounds of "serious procedural errors affecting the merits of the case."

Klubradio is the only major opposition radio station in Hungary and the Media Council's persistent efforts to shut it down have led to speculation about the council's motives.

"From a legal perspective, it's impossible to achieve Klubradio's disappearance, so there can only be political motivations behind it," said Klubradio managing director Andras Arato.

Because of the long legal process, Klubradio has been operating on temporary permits for nearly two years, crippling the station's advertising revenues. It's tenth consecutive, two-month temporary license expires Oct. 5.

Arato said the station was also being excluded from broadcasting state ads, an important source of income for Hungarian media. Funding for the station hoping to celebrate its 10th anniversary in December has come mostly through donations from listeners.

"Klubradio and its audience of several hundred thousand listeners are being bled and starved to death," he said.

In a brief statement, the Media Council said the court ruling Wednesday meant there were no valid bids for the broadcasting license in question, so the bidding process was void.

Earlier this year, EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes mentioned Klubradio's struggles as an example of the Hungarian government's efforts to limit political debate in the media.

Orban and his right-wing Fidesz party swept into power in 2010 and have used their two-thirds majority in parliament to radically change Hungary's political, economic and social landscape.

The EU and the United States have expressed concerns about issues like press freedom in Hungary and the independence of its judiciary and the national bank.

"Klubradio has an established role among the voices that don't agree with the government," said Polyak, the media expert. "Klubradio's disappearance would clearly diminish the pluralism of opinions and the access to information in Hungary."

Recipe: Mixed Bean Masala with Fragrant Yellow Rice Recipes ...

2012_09_25-BeanMasala01.jpgMy stepdad brought Indian home cooking into my life. He and my mother had been high school sweethearts, American students at an international school in the foothills of the Himalayas where my stepdad had grown up, stuffing himself on dal and pappadums throughout childhood and cultivating a lifelong craving for fragrant vegetarian curries. Thanks to him and to recipes like this mixed bean masala, it's a craving I now share. Quick, healthy and economical, it's an easy recipe to double and freeze in preparation for chilly winter nights, when the scent of onion, ginger and spices bubbling on the stove will warm up the whole house.

2012_09_25-BeanMasala02.jpg

This recipe is a riff on chana masala ? a curry of spiced chickpeas in a gingery tomato sauce ? using any type of cooked bean you happen to have on hand. You can use just one type of bean, but for color and texture variety, I like using a mixture. (I doubled the recipe for the batch pictured above, and used a mix of white beans, black beans and chickpeas.) Although plain white or brown rice is a fine accompaniment, my favorite way to eat curries like these is spooned over turmeric-spiced yellow rice, which looks special, but is just as easy to make as plain rice.

2012_09_25-BeanMasala03.jpg

The key to the tomato sauce is blending the onion, garlic and ginger into a smooth paste that is added to the pot after the dry spices have been fried in a little oil. The warmed spices and aromatic paste meld with the tomatoes into a smooth and very flavorful sauce. After adding the beans, some fresh cilantro, and chilies if you like it spicy, you let everything simmer for 30 minutes, just enough time to make a pot of yellow rice, and then dinner is served.

2012_09_25-BeanMasala04.jpg

One batch is enough to give my two-person household dinner and enough leftovers for a couple of lunches, but when I really want to maximize my time in the kitchen, I double the recipe and freeze the extra for future meals. The rice recipe can be doubled and frozen too; as long as it is kept separate from the sauce until serving, it won't become mushy, and you'll have a nourishing meal in the freezer, ready to heat when you need it.

2012_09_25-BeanMasala05.jpg

Mixed Bean Masala

Makes 6 servings

1 onion
2 cloves garlic
1-inch piece of ginger, peeled
1 tablespoon water
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon garam masala
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1/2 teaspoon salt (more if canned tomatoes are unsalted)
1 28-ounce can chopped tomatoes
2 15-ounce cans beans, drained and rinsed
2 tablespoons cilantro, coarsely chopped, plus more for serving
Chopped fresh chilies or red pepper flakes to taste (optional)
Fragrant Yellow Rice, for serving (recipe below)
Plain yogurt, for serving (optional)

Roughly chop the onions, garlic and ginger. Process in a food processor or blender until a smooth paste forms, adding up to 1 tablespoon water if needed.

Heat the oil in a large saucepan over medium heat and add the cumin, garam masala and coriander. Fry the spices for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring frequently, until fragrant. Add the onion-ginger paste and cook for another 2 minutes, stirring, until most of the added water has evaporated. Add the salt, tomatoes, beans, cilantro and chilies or pepper flakes, if using. Bring to a boil and lower heat. Simmer uncovered 30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Taste and adjust seasoning. Garnish with additional chopped cilantro and serve over rice, with a dollop of yogurt on the side.

Fragrant Yellow Rice

Adapted from Madhur Jaffrey's Indian Cooking. Makes about 6 cups cooked rice

2 cups jasmine rice
2 cups water
1 bay leaf
2-inch piece of cinnamon stick
3 whole cloves
3/4 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons butter or olive oil

Rinse the rice 2 or 3 times and drain. Add the rice, water, bay leaf, cinnamon, cloves, turmeric and salt to a medium size pot and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cover, turn the heat to low and cook for 10 minutes. Remove pot from heat and let sit, still covered, for 10 minutes. Uncover and remove the bay leaf, cinnamon stick and cloves. Add butter or oil and stir.

Additional Notes
? If you want to substitute another type of rice (basmati, brown, etc.), increase the amount of water and cooking time according to the package directions.

? To freeze, let finished stew cool, then pack into freezer bags or freezer-safe containers and store in the freezer for up to 3 months. Rice can also be frozen in a separate container. To reheat the beans, thaw in the refrigerator overnight or in the microwave, and warm in a pot on the stove until bubbling. The rice reheats best covered in the microwave.

Rangers rally past A's 5-4 for 5-game AL West lead

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? Adrian Beltre singled home the winning run in the ninth inning and the Texas Rangers rallied past Oakland 5-4 on Monday night to stretch their AL West lead over the Athletics to five games with nine to play.

Beltre, whose 35th homer tied the score in the seventh, grounded a sharp single through the middle of the infield off Tyson Ross (2-11) in the ninth, bringing home pinch-runner Craig Gentry.

The Rangers got the inning started with consecutive singles by Mitch Moreland and Ian Kinsler before Elvis Andrus' sacrifice bunt. Josh Hamilton, who had already hit his major league-best 43rd homer after missing the previous five games with a cornea issue, was intentionally walked to load the bases.

Oakland has lost six of seven.

Kosovo Kids Taught False History, Study Shows :: Balkan Insight

The study by the Humanitarian Law Centre - Kosovo, was conducted at a number of secondary schools across Kosovo and is based on one-to-one and group interviews with children aged between 15-17 years-old about the war and its victims.

Kreshnik Sylejmani, the project coordinator, said that the findings show that pupils do not know what happened during the Kosovo war in 1998 and 1999.

?We have asked the kids about the number of killed and disappeared in Kosovo during the Kosovo war. Some children answered 250,000 victims. Their text books do not give them that information,? Sylejmani said.

The conflict in Kosovo between Serb security forces and the insurgent Kosovo Liberation Army, claimed around 10,000 victims, the majority Kosovo Albanians. The war ended after a 78-day NATO air-bombing campaign in 1999 that ousted Serb armed forces from the province, which was then put under UN administration.

Kosovo declared independence in 2008 - a move recognised by 89 UN member states, including the United States and 22 EU member states, but challenged by Belgrade.

The HLC?s round-table about transitional justice and facing the past, organized on Friday in Pristina, found that the lack of historical facts in the school curriculum about these painful events, is detrimental to children?s education and for reconciliation in the region. ?

During its study, the centre played tapes of war victims, describing their sufferings during the war, without revealing their ethnic background.

?Children in some regions did not even know that there were victims on the Serb side too, when they found out that the voice they were listening was of a Kosovo Serb victim. The children denied that there were Serb victims during the war, it was difficult for them to cope with the information we passed onto them,? Sylejmani added.

Shkelzen Gashi, a political scientist from Kosovo, presented his comparative study of 7th grade primary school history text books in Kosovo, Albania and Serbia.

He said that he had found a massive falsification and distortion of data, and a misrepresentation of events, in both the Albanian and Serb text books.

?Look at the famous events of 1389. In Serbia, the Battle of Kosovo is represented as a war, sanctioned ?by God himself. The fact that other Balkan nations also fought against the Ottoman Empire is not mentioned, " he said.

"In Kosovan books, the participation of other nations in the battle is over emphasised. Even Milos Obilic is transformed into an Albanian, and called Milos Kopiliq. He is even said to have come originally from Drenica, where our current Prime Minister is from,? Gashi added.

During his investigation, Gashi discovered that the Albanians and Serbs highlight the crimes of the other side, while remaining mute about their own. Kosovan history books fail to mention that Kosovo Serbs were killed during the 1999 war, while Serb books remain silent about the Albanians that were killed.

What he finds even more problematic is the hate speech that is used throughout the text books.

?I was horrified to find that instead of facts, figures and arguments, you find hate speech. ?The Kosovan books talk about state genocide against the Albanians. The Serb books, on the other hand, present the Kosovo Albanians as terrorists and fascists.? These extreme views ?should not be found in history books for children aged of 15 and 17,? he said.

?Believe me, the history books that Hashim Thaci, Ivica Dacic and Sali Berisha read when they were in school were so much better than the current ones . At least they did not contain hate speech,? he added.

11. Healthy Foods and Obesity Prevention: Increasing Markets for Fruit and Vegetable Farmers

In one interview segment, a public health official says, ??Government is how we solve problems collectively that we can?t solve individually.? Filmmakers present many compelling individual case studies (e.g. a registered nurse showing heartfelt compassionate? to obese patients says ?they need us to care and we do?) and people seem willing to solve the obesity epidemic themselves, yet the resulting actions reflect a different desire.

Maybe the best solution is just watching the results from a sharp increase in U.S. obesity rates over the last 30 years. In one scene, a patient making some relatively weak excuses for his obesity as a doctor attempting to advise him rolls his eyes at the excuses. A musician describes his battle for personal health as ?what will be? amid a society where most people say ?I?d like to or need to?.

Why Americans are eating more than they used to? ?Our environment sets the tone. We often justify our food intake as a ?necessary? energy source our body needs for fuel or as a desirable reward we justify in our minds for certain behaviors without outside perspective or scrutiny. People need help on many fronts to improve obesity. Are we victims of family genetics or can we save lives? with proper attention to mental conditioning history and other psychological aspects. We say obesity is ?preventable? , but are not willing in invest in enough mental health resources to battle the psychological consequences that include social stigma, low self-esteem, stress, anxiety, and depression. In my view everyone has value, but everyone experiences what is acceptable and? attractive within constructed social confines that can imprison people from a freeing, unselfish healthy lifestyle.

I feel this issue eventually reveals the following statement: ?I know what is good for me?I just don?t want to do it.? People know this truth. They can substitute this statement to many other life elements. People must make concerted efforts with local communities, their family and friends similar to actions like Carly mentioned in her recent ?Grocery Shopping Across Generations? feature where people can ?look outside of the traditional grocery store to find what they want.? This extra effort means a lot as we battle a pervasive food marketing environment, sleep deprivation from overwork, detrimental personal lifestyles/social circles, and the ease in accessibility and purchase for foods high in sugar, fat and salt.

Weight of the Nation is a worthwhile film that challenges, refines, and reshapes our health processes while occasionally presenting some sensationalized, manipulative-feeling elements. Non-fiction documentaries can certainly promote action, but can also sensationalize and misrepresent certain aspects due to lack of objectivity. For example, filmmakers connect one subject?s comments with his negative view of the TV show The Biggest Loser without taking the due diligence to research the show?s contestant screening process.

Audiences can definitely experience high emotions when viewing effective visuals, charts, and even biological presentation comparing the biopsy of two hearts and aortas from heart healthy and unhealthy people. Basic physiology presentations make strong, common sense cases, especially when explanations about men?s bodies using their abdominal area more to hunt food for their family and women using their hips and thighs for breastfeeding and child caring.

The Dolby Digital 2.0 sound helps bring the messages through loud and clear. Produced and directed by Dan Chaykin, this film continues HBO?s prominent documentary features that address pertinent national health issues (e.g. 2007?s Addiction and 2009?s The Alzheimer?s Project). The Weight of the Nation is presented HBO documentary films, the Institute of Medicine in association with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, the Michael & Susan Dell Foundation and Kaiser Permanente.

Rather than roaring to space on an elevator of flame, the shuttle Endeavour's final flight Friday was a leisurely, low-altitude journey past the iconic Golden Gate Bridge and Hollywood sign as well as other California landmarks.

The workhorse rode piggyback atop a Boeing 747 to its home state and ultimately landed at Los Angeles International Airport.

NASA's shuttle fleet, which retired last year after three decades of flight, was assembled in Palmdale, Calif., near Edwards Air Force Base. The military outpost 100 miles north of Los Angeles served as the original shuttle landing strip and remained a backup site in case of stormy weather at Cape Canaveral, Fla.

Endeavour's final airborne journey started with takeoff from Edwards and a northern heading to swoop low over Sacramento before flying by San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz prison.

The flight then turned south for a fly-by at West Coast space port Vandenberg Air Force Base. Other sites where people gathered to gawk ? and shoot photos and video ? included Malibu, Santa Monica, the Getty Center, Griffith Observatory, downtown Los Angeles and the Queen Mary, a transportation relic enshrined in Long Beach.

Endeavour later will be hauled 12 miles on city streets to its home at the California Science Center.

Children with Autism Experience Interrelated Health Issues | www ...

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend by emailSend by email Share this

Kate McIntyre, COLUMBIA, Mo. ? One in 88 children has been diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A new study by a University of Missouri researcher found that many children with ASD also experience anxiety, chronic gastrointestinal (GI) problems and atypical sensory responses, which are heightened reactions to light, sound or particular textures.

These problems appear to be highly related and can have significant effects on children?s daily lives, including their functioning at home and in school.

Micah Mazurek, an assistant professor of health psychology and a clinical child psychologist, found in her study of 2,973 children and adolescents with ASD that nearly one-fourth also had chronic GI problems, such as constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea or nausea. The results also showed that children with chronic GI problems were more likely to experience anxiety and sensory problems.

?These problems can have a very real impact on daily life. Children with anxiety may be distressed or reluctant to engage in new activities, and those with sensory problems may have trouble paying attention or participating in over-stimulating enviornments,? Mazurek said. ?These children may also suffer uncomfortable GI problems that they may not be able to communicate about to adults.?

Clinicians should be aware that anxiety, GI problems and sensory sensitivity often co-occur in individuals with ASD. Effectively managing these concurrent issues may improve children?s quality of life and their responses to treatment, Mazurek said.

?Parents need to be aware that these problems may underlie some of their children?s difficulties, so if they notice any symptoms, they should talk to their doctors or therapists about treatment options,? Mazurek said. ?Practitioners who work with children with ASD need to be mindful that there is a pretty high rate of these problems, so if children are treated for one issue, it may helpful to screen for these additional symptoms.?

This is the first study to examine the relationships among anxiety, GI problems and sensory over-responsivity in a large, nationally representative sample of children and adolescents with ASD. Participants in the study were enrolled in the Autism Treatment Network, a network of 17 autism centers throughout North America that are focused on best practices for medical treatment of children with ASD.

The study, ?Anxiety, Sensory Over-Responsivity, and Gastrointestinal Problems in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders,? was published in the Journal of Abnormal Child Psychology. Mazurek is an assistant professor in the Department of Health Psychology in the MU School of Health Professions and a clinical child psychologist at the MU Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. Mazurek?s coauthors from the School of Health Professions include Stephen Kanne, executive director of the Thompson Center and the William and Nancy Thompson Endowed Chair in Child Health in the Department of Health Psychology; and Lee Ann Lowery, director of the MU Pediatric Occupational Therapy Clinic in the Thompson Center and a clinical associate professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy. Several experts external to MU also contributed to the study.

German court rules that Motorola, Samsung don't violate Apple touch event patent

Galaxy S III and iPhone 4S

Motorola and Samsung just caught a break from the law after a few hard knocks. A Mannheim, Germany court has ruled that neither company infringes on an Apple patent covering how an OS responds to and ignores touch events. While we don't yet know the full details, patent lawsuit guru Florian Mueller suggests that the German judge took the same point of view that thwarted Apple's claims in the Netherlands and the UK: the particular patent was just too broad to stick. It's a potentially important win, as a ruling of violation could have led to serious problems with keeping Android-based Motorola and Samsung devices in stores; other patents are more easily circumvented. However, it's still something of a Pyrrhic victory for a pair of companies that have lately been facing the threat of near-term bans and steep damages.

Misinformation: Psychological Science shows why it sticks and how to fix it

Thursday, September 20, 2012

Childhood vaccines do not cause autism. Barack Obama was born in the United States. Global warming is confirmed by science. And yet, many people believe claims to the contrary.

Why does that kind of misinformation stick? A new report published in Psychological Science in the Public Interest, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science, explores this phenomenon. Psychological scientist Stephan Lewandowsky of the University of Western Australia and colleagues highlight the cognitive factors that make certain pieces of misinformation so "sticky" and identify some techniques that may be effective in debunking or counteracting erroneous beliefs.

The main reason that misinformation is sticky, according to the researchers, is that rejecting information actually requires cognitive effort. Weighing the plausibility and the source of a message is cognitively more difficult than simply accepting that the message is true ? it requires additional motivational and cognitive resources. If the topic isn't very important to you or you have other things on your mind, misinformation is more likely to take hold.

And when we do take the time to thoughtfully evaluate incoming information, there are only a few features that we are likely to pay attention to: Does the information fit with other things I believe in? Does it make a coherent story with what I already know? Does it come from a credible source? Do others believe it?

Misinformation is especially sticky when it conforms to our preexisting political, religious, or social point of view. Because of this, ideology and personal worldviews can be especially difficult obstacles to overcome.

Even worse, efforts to retract misinformation often backfire, paradoxically amplifying the effect of the erroneous belief.

"This persistence of misinformation has fairly alarming implications in a democracy because people may base decisions on information that, at some level, they know to be false," says Lewandowsky.

"At an individual level, misinformation about health issues?for example, unwarranted fears regarding vaccinations or unwarranted trust in alternative medicine?can do a lot of damage. At a societal level, persistent misinformation about political issues (e.g., Obama's health care reform) can create considerable harm. On a global scale, misinformation about climate change is currently delaying mitigative action."

Though misinformation may be difficult to correct, all is not lost. According to Lewandowsky, "psychological science has the potential to counteract all those harms by educating people and communicators about the power of misinformation and how to meet it."

In their report, Lewandowsky and colleagues offer some strategies for setting the record straight.

  • Provide people with a narrative that replaces the gap left by false information
  • Focus on the facts you want to highlight, rather than the myths
  • Make sure that the information you want people to take away is simple and brief
  • Consider your audience and the beliefs they are likely to hold
  • Strengthen your message through repetition

Research has shown that attempts at "debiasing" can be effective in the real world when based on these evidence-based strategies.

Not enough Nigerians use Internet for business

Nigeria?s National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) raised concern that the majority of Nigerians are not?using the Internet for business purposes, as only 6.7-million citizens have ventured online to?conduct business ? that is just a fraction of the 160-million population.

The majority of Nigerians aren?t using the internet for business purposes (image: stock.xchng)

According to figures from NITDA, only 45-million use the Internet at work, school or in their houses. ?NITDA?s Director General, Professor Cleopas Angaye said the percentage of businesses that use computers was 39 per cent while that of businesses that use the Internet for customer service was just 15 per cent of the total number of 45 million Internet users in the country,? wrote Nigeria?s Daily Trust.

According to Angaye, only 30% of business that use the Internet are involved in customer service, while only 16% of businesses in the country are involved in online product delivery. ?But he said the baseline indicators of e-business by states showed that percentage for businesses with computers was significant in all the states surveyed, but particularly high in states like Kaduna and Lagos,? Daily Trust added.

The most worrying factor for Angaye is that e-government usage is even worse, with?only 8% of MDAs at?federal level?receiving orders via the Internet ? and only 38% of them have functioning computers. He?added that only 60% of MDAs within?states have websites.

?Professor Angaye said 70 per cent of Nigerians live in the rural areas and these people?are not connected to the Internet. He added that there is huge market for Internet related businesses in Nigeria as the country has the highest number of Internet users in Africa and eleventh in the world,? Daily Trust concluded.

Long-term liabilities key New Jersey credit challenge: Fitch

(Reuters) - New Jersey's fiscal 2013 revenue projections may be too optimistic as long-term liabilities continue to cloud the state's credit picture, Fitch Ratings said on Thursday.

"Fitch believes there is notable downside risk in New Jersey's revenue budget for fiscal 2013 due to the level of economic uncertainty and recent modest growth in actual revenues," the rating agency said in a statement.

An underperforming economy and disappointing tax collections would be blows to Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, who has trumpeted the state's comeback.

"This has nothing to do with the state's credit rating, which Fitch affirmed last week," Andy Pratt, a spokesman for the New Jersey Treasury, said in an email.

Some of the state's problems - in particular, pension funding issues - are "legacies of past administrations" that Christie, a possible presidential contender in 2016, has worked to address, Pratt said.

Other states may also find that the uncertain economic recovery strains their budgets. State tax collectors cranked out a 10th straight quarter of gains in the April-June period, but the overall 3 percent rise from a year earlier marked further slowing of revenue improvements, a study said Wednesday.

The warning by Fitch follows Tuesday's revision in the outlook for New Jersey's general obligation bonds to "negative" from "stable" by Standard & Poor's, which also cited optimistic revenue assumptions.

New Jersey's unemployment rate is the highest it has been since 1977, rising in August for the fifth straight month to 9.9 percent, state labor officials said on Thursday. The national unemployment rate was 8.1 percent in August.

The state does enjoy some strengths; its economy remains wealthy and diverse, Fitch said.

But should the economic and revenue recovery falter, the state will find it harder to deal with two major problems: its high debt and significant and growing unfunded pension and employee benefits, Fitch said.

Though legislation was enacted to curb the growth of these costs, "continued pension funding level deterioration is expected," the credit agency said.

The pension plan was 60.8 percent funded, on an aggregate basis, as of June 30, 2011. The total amount of debt outstanding was 7.8 percent of preliminary 2011 personal income, as of June 30, 2012, Fitch said.

"When combined with the unfunded pension obligations, this figure increases to 16.3 percent, well above the 6.6 percent median for states rated by Fitch," the credit agency said.

Samsung's Galaxy Note II, a 5.5-inch-screen phone/tablet (termed by some as a "phablet"),?will be available in the U.S. by mid-November, the company said Wednesday.

Pricing was not announced, but Samsung said the Galaxy?Note II will be available from?AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular. The original Galaxy Note goes for around $200 with a new ?two-year contract with a carrier.

The Galaxy Note II?will also be the first Samsung phone to use the latest version of Android, 4.1, also known as Jelly Bean.

The original Galaxy Note has a 5.3-inch screen, but the Note II's screen will be 5.5 inches, narrower and longer than the first version. The HD Super AMOLED touchscreen has a 16:9 aspect ratio. A faster processor is being used?? a?1.6 GHz quad-core processor, compared to the current model's?1.4?GHz dual-core processor.

The Note ? part phone, part tablet ??has been a hit for Samsung, which has sold more than 10 million of the devices worldwide in its first year.

It uses a stylus, called the S Pen, and Samsung says for the Note II, the stylus has been "ergonomically redesigned to provide a more precise and natural writing and drawing experience. The new S Pen can sense 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, four times more than the original S Pen."

The Samsung Galaxy Note II will come in two colors:?"Marble White" and "Titanium Gray."

Analysis: Inventory mountain adds to pain for Chinese solar firms

(Reuters) - In China's Jiangsu province, near Shanghai, mountains of solar panels sitting around a factory owned by Trina Solar Ltd are fast losing their value.

Trina and other Chinese solar companies, including Suntech Power Holdings Co Ltd and Yingli Green Energy Holding Co Ltd , hold inventory of about 5 gigawatts (GW), analysts say, nearly one-sixth of annual global demand.

The stockpiles would be valued at about $4.5 billion based on the average selling price of 87 cents for a panel in the second quarter, but the glut means prices are falling fast.

The companies, which face a steep anti-dumping duty in the United States and possible tariffs in top market Europe, have few options but sell the existing excess cheaply in China.

"With the anti-dumping investigation starting in Europe, Chinese companies are avoiding shipping to the continent at the moment," said analyst Stefan de Haan at business information provider IHS Inc.

"This will further increase inventory over the next few weeks or so."

Companies have already started slashing production but they have a long way to go. Chinese makers have the capacity to produce 50 GW of solar panels a year -- well above global annual demand for 30 GW.

Analysts have taken note and have pushed up their loss forecasts for Yingli, Suntech, Trina and JA Solar Holdings Co Ltd , Thomson Reuters StarMine data shows.

Panel prices are already the lowest in China and they are expected to fall further below 58 cents per watt, according to IHS. It says prices in the United States, Canada, and Mexico are expected to be 69 cents per watt.

EUROPEAN BLUES

China sold about 21 billion euros ($27.42 billion) in solar panels and components to the European Union in 2011 -- some 60 percent of all Chinese solar exports.

But the regulatory problems have come on top of the global glut -- which formed after Chinese manufacturers ramped up production just as top European markets cut subsidies.

Stockpiles of solar panels at Chinese firms now average about 110 days of sales, three times the 42 days of inventory averaged globally, Thomson Reuters data shows.

European solar companies, led by Solarworld AG , allege that Chinese producers sell panels below market value, prompting a European regulatory investigation.

Chinese companies have denied the charges, but to minimize losses from any eventuality, some are looking to cut production. Suntech, the world's largest solar panel maker, said on Monday it would slash its capacity to produce cells, used to make panels, by a quarter.

To get rid of excess inventory, Trina has also lowered production, raised sales in China and is looking at newer markets, said Thomas Young, a spokesman for the company.

DEEPER CUTS NEEDED

GTM Research analyst Shyam Mehta said about 15 GW of Chinese capacity needs to be taken offline for supply and demand to come into a balance.

"Given the continuing price pressure in the sector, with very little hope of the prices stabilizing at the current levels, it is still the best strategy to try to keep your inventories as low as possible, and sell your products," said Thiemo Lang, senior portfolio manager at Zurich-based Sustainable Asset Management.

Lang, who manages a fund that has $900 million in cleantech assets under management, says solar panel and cell companies offer little value now because of the chronic oversupply and regulatory uncertainty.

The glut has already sent prices crashing, with solar panels, which cost as much as $4.20 a watt in 2008, diving 80 percent in the past four years.

Most of the Chinese companies wrote down the value of their inventory in the second quarter and their shares have lost about three-quarters of their value in the past year.

With doors to Europe and the United States closing, Chinese companies have to sell at home, but that market would have to expand massively to cater to their production.

China's consumption of solar power products is expected to jump to about 3.5 GW in the second half of the year from 2 GW in the first, Mehta said.

The country last month raised its 2015 target for solar power capacity by 40 percent to about 21 GW, the third rise in just over a year -- but sales are needed now, in 2012.

"The Chinese companies (would be) more than willing to try to deploy their modules in their own country, but it seems that the overall Chinese market won't be more than 4 GW this year, and that the pricing will be quite poor," said Lang.

While most other companies have much lower inventories, two U.S. firms, SunPower Corp and First Solar Inc , had stocks just 15 days lower than their Chinese rivals, yet they were among the very few profitable solar companies in the June quarter.
