Berlusconi bounces back in early vote count

By Barry Moody and James Mackenzie, Reuters

ROME ? Projections from an early vote count in Italy's election on Monday showed Silvio Berlusconi's center-right slightly ahead in the Senate, a result that could cause deep government instability if confirmed.

The projections on RAI, Sky, Mediaset and LA 7 television stations were the reverse of earlier predictions from telephone polls that showed the center-left taking a strong lead in both houses of parliament.

The change in predictions had an immediate impact on markets, which rose earlier on hopes of a stable and strong center-left-led government.

Antonio Calanni / AP

Former Premier Silvio Berlusconi exits a booth as he votes in a polling station in Milan, Sunday.

Such a government, probably backed by outgoing technocrat premier Mario Monti, is seen as the best guarantee of measures to combat a deep recession and stagnant growth.

Berlusconi's aim is to win enough power in the Senate to paralyze a center-left-led government.

The benchmark spread between Italian 10-year bonds and their German equivalent widened from below 260 basis points to above 280 and the Italian share index lost previous gains.

The earlier telephone polls on Sky and Rai television after voting ended at 3 p.m. (9 a.m. ET) had showed the center-left of Pier Luigi Bersani 5-6 points ahead of the center-right in both Senate and lower house, with the anti-establishment movement of Genoese comedian Beppe Grillo taking third place.

But early projections on RAI television and based on a small sample of the 47 million electorate showed Berlusconi's coalition, which includes the federalist Northern League, ahead of Bersani in the Senate by just over 2 percentage points. The projections still placed Grillo third.

Italy's electoral laws guarantee a strong majority in the lower house to the party or coalition that wins the biggest share of the national vote.

However the Senate, elected on a region-by-region basis, is more complicated, and the result will turn on four key battleground regions. Projections from LA 7 showed Berlusconi winning in three of them: Lombardy, Sicily and Campania.

The RAI projection showed him strongly ahead in the rich northern region Lombardy, with 31.6 percent against 29.4 percent for the center left, with Grillo on 24.9 percent.

Italy, the euro zone's third-largest economy, is pivotal to stability in the currency union.

TechSpot: Triple Monitor Gaming on a Budget - Neowin

With 2012 delivering the industry's first 28nm GPUs from both AMD and Nvidia, we enjoyed watching the bitter ritual of one-upmanship as the titans scrambled to earn your cash. After a year's worth of staggered releases, price cuts, exclusive deals and driver updates, the dust finally settled enough last November.

Considering next-gen cards are still months away, we didn't expect to bring any more GPU reviews until the second quarter of 2013. However, we realized there was a gap in our current-gen coverage: triple-monitor gaming. In fact, it's been almost two years since we pitted the HD 6990 and GTX 590 against each other to see how they could cope with the stress of running games at resolutions of up to 7680x1600.

Mixing things up a little this time, instead of using each camp's ultra-pricey dual-GPU card (or the new $999 Titan), we're going to see how more affordable Crossfire and SLI setups handle triple-monitor gaming compared to today's single-GPU flagships. On AMD's side, we are testing a pair of HD 7850s (~$360) and an HD 7970 (~$430), while Nvidia's corner will feature two GTX 660 Tis (~$580) and the venerable GTX 680 (~$470).

Grammarly Checks the Grammar and Spelling of Any Document and Helps You Fix It

Grammarly Checks the Grammar and Spelling of Any Document and Helps You Fix ItGrammar can be a tough nut to crack, and there are times when a few mistakes here and there can determine whether or not you get a job or an A on your paper. Grammarly is a web app that scrutinizes your sentence structure to find errors and help you correct them.

It'll check any text for free and let you know what the errors are, but you'll need an account to get the specifics. Those accounts don't come cheap, starting at $30 per month (with much steeper discounts if you pay by the year). Nevertheless, you can try it out for seven days. If you feel it's worth the money you can continue, but if you just have a resume and cover letter to check you can do that much for free. In my tests, Grammarly does a pretty good job of pointing out potential issues. It errs on the aggressive side?so much so that it thought part of this post was plagiarized?but you can always ignore its suggestions if you don't agree.

Suspect named in Las Vegas shooting that killed aspiring rapper

(Reuters) - Police have identified a suspect in the fatal shooting of an aspiring rapper as he drove on the Las Vegas Strip in a Maserati before dawn on Thursday, sparking a fiery crash that also killed a cab driver and his passenger.

Ammar Asim Faruq Harris, described as armed and dangerous, was still at large on Saturday, but the black Range Rover from which he is suspected of opening fire had been impounded, Las Vegas police said.

Authorities said a gunman in a Range Rover opened fire early on Thursday on the silver Maserati being driven by 27-year-old Kenneth Wayne Cherry Jr., who performed under the name "Kenny Clutch."

Cherry was slain and his car veered out of control and smashed into a taxi, which exploded into flames in an intersection on the Las Vegas Strip in front of several casino resorts, killing the driver and a passenger and triggering another multi-car crash.

Authorities believe the confrontation started in the valet parking lot of a nearby hotel, the Aria Resort and Casino. But police did not identify a motive for the shooting or the altercation.

Police identified Harris, 26, as the driver of the apparently brand-new luxury sport utility vehicle, and said he had also opened fire. Police said in a statement that he had an "extensive and violent criminal history."

Killed in the cab were driver Michael Bolden, 62, and a passenger who has not been identified by authorities. Las Vegas television station KTNV identified the passenger killed as Sandi Sutton, a Washington state woman who worked for a Seattle-area chamber of commerce.

A passenger in Cherry's vehicle suffered a minor injury and cooperated with police, authorities said. Three other people were also injured in the melee, which took place near the Bellagio and Caesars Palace hotels.

The incident occurred less than a mile from where rapper Tupac Shakur was shot in September 1996 while riding in a BMW with Death Row Records co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight after the two men had attended a Mike Tyson boxing match.

Shakur, 25, was hit by gunfire from at least one assailant in a Cadillac while sitting in Knight's car at the intersection of Flamingo Road and Koval Lane and died six days later at a hospital. His murder remains unsolved.

Genetic variation controls predation: Benefits of being a mosaic

Wednesday, February 20, 2013

A genetically mosaic Eucalyptus tree is able to control which leaves are saved from predation because of alterations in its genes, finds an study published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Plant Biology. Between two leaves of the same tree there can be many genetic differences ? this study found ten SNP, including ones in genes that regulate terpene production, which influence whether or not a leaf is edible.

Organisms collect somatic genetic mutations throughout their lives. These mutations may have no effect or they may occur in genes important to how the cell behaves. Cancer cells often have genetic mutations which permit the cell to divide more times than an unmutated cell, and in plants it is somatic mutation which allows a single tree to produce both nectarines and peaches.

Researchers from the Australian National University found that in the long-lived Eucalyptus tree (Eucalyptus melliodora ) somatic mutation is also responsible for their interesting ability to produce some branches with leaves that are readily predated, while others are pest resistant.

At a genetic level there were ten genes which contained differences between these leaves. Amanda Padovan, who led this project, explained, "The main defence against predation of Eucalyptus is a cocktail of terpene oils, including monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, and FPCs, which give the tree its distinctive smell. Leaves which were resistant to predation had five fewer monoterpenes and nine fewer sesquiterpenes than the tastier leaves. However the concentration of FPCs and the remaining monoterpenes was far higher - so it seems that these mutations reduce the tight control over terpene production."

While this loss of control probably has a high evolutionary cost, it allows the tree to survive the insect-plant war. The tree investigated had one branch which was untouched by insects when the rest of the tree was completely defoliated.

Billboards May Be Bad News for Drivers

Are billboards driving you to distraction? New research suggests that the language used on billboards may have a negative effect on driving ability.

In a study conducted by the University of Alberta, participants drove past 20?billboards that contained positive, negative or neutral language.

"Studies have shown that when subjects see an emotional stimulus as opposed to a neutral one, they?re slower in making reaction-time responses and they?re slower when doing a visual search, said Michelle Chan, lead author of the study. "I wanted to see whether the results would carry over in driving ? would we also find more distracted performance in driving? ? and we did see that.?

Chan and her fellow researchers found that emotionally charged words affected the driver?s focus, a result that could have dangerous repercussions when carried into the real world. Researchers said that subjects who viewed billboards with?negative language ?were more likely to decrease their speed and veer from their lane. Drivers who viewed positive language on billboards, on the other hand, tended to pick up speed.

"There have been studies showing that when you?re positively stimulated, your attention broadens, so you perform better when you?re in a happy mood," Chan said.

In countries like the United States, where billboard advertising?is common and not highly regulated, negative-language billboards could be slowing down drivers? reaction times, Chan said. She also notes that other countries, such as Australia, are much stricter when it comes to advertising on billboards, which might be good news for drivers.

?Any kind of distraction is risky when you?re driving,? Chan said. ?But it would appear to be a larger risk when it comes to emotional stimuli.?

New York Bros Have Received 500 Responses and Counting for Craigslist Ad Seeking Wedding Dates

Dave and Mike had a problem: The bros (in every sense of the word) have been told that they must bring dates to their cousin's upcoming wedding in order to prevent them from "harassing" the bride's friends all night, but both guys are single, and neither of them wants to ask one of the "fringe women" in their lives and "face the inevitable 'does this mean he wants to take it to the next level'" questions afterwards. Their solution: bring "complete strangers" whom they find through Craigslist.

"We're born and bred?Craigslisters," the brothers told Daily Intelligencer in an e-mail today. "We threw [the post] together in 5 minutes, just had to dig through to archives to find that pic of us when we were centaurs. Man, those were the days."

From what Dave and Mike tell us, they're going to have a lot of women to pick from. Their ad has steadily gained attention online since being picked up by Reddit yesterday, thanks to its ridiculous aforementioned photos and off-color humor. (Outlining their ideal women, the brothers write, "You should be attractive or our aunts will judge you, but not TOO attractive or one of our uncles might grope you." They answer one anticipated FAQ?? "This feels kinda creepy, are you guys Craigslist killers?" ? with "No. Well, if you want to be techni.. nevermind. No, we aren't.")

It worked. The Bros, who are originally from Albany but now live in New York and D.C. (although we're not sure which one is where), tell us, "Our Gmail is getting abused." And things are just getting started. "We're approaching 500 responses and counting," they tell us. "Now that the Huffington Post tweeted it that number seems to just be picking up. Love is in the air, Dan."

Asked how their family is going to react to the stunt, one brother told us, "Out of boredom I tried to convince my dad at Christmas that I'd gone gay now because the lifestyle just suits me better. He was very confused and extremely unamused. I'd imagine he'll have the same response to this once we just keep repeating, 'We've gone viral, pop.'"

North Korea warns South of 'final destruction'

BERLIN (AP) ? Nuclear-armed North Korea has used a U.N. disarmament meeting to warn that South Korea risks "final destruction."

The comments Tuesday by a North Korean diplomat at the Geneva-based Conference on Disarmament come a week after Pyongyang conducted a third nuclear test.

Several countries, including the United States, Britain and Germany, condemned the latest test at the meeting and urged North Korea to abide by U.N. resolutions barring it from testing nuclear weapons or missiles.

South Korea called the tests a flagrant violation of U.N. resolutions and a threat to the entire international community.

Upon which North Korea's representative declared that "South Korea's erratic behavior would only herald its final destruction."

U.S. envoy Laura E. Kennedy tweeted later that the North's comments had been "offensive."

Photographer: Baldwin used racial slur

By Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, TODAY

AP file

Alec Baldwin and wife HIlaria.

Actor Alec Baldwin says he did not use a racial slur in a Sunday morning confrontation with a photographer that landed on the cover of the New York Post.??

"This is completely false," Baldwin's spokesman?Matthew Hiltzik told TODAY of the alleged racial slur.?

"The claim of racist remarks is one of the most outrageous things I?ve heard in my life," said Baldwin.?

According to the Post, reporter Tara Palmeri and G. N. Miller, a former policeman turned photographer, approached Baldwin Sunday morning as he was walking his dogs in New York, asking about a lawsuit filed against Baldwin's pregnant wife, yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas Baldwin.

The Post reports that Baldwin grabbed Palmeri's arm and told her, "I want to choke you to death," then used a racial slur to refer to Miller, who is black.

The Post ran a photograph of Baldwin holding Palmeri's arm as she holds a small tape recorder, and reports that Palmeri played an audio recording of the conversation for the police.

Baldwin told Gothamist that he felt the photographer deliberately "banged into me with his shoulder." The actor denied using racial slurs, saying "I don't think I've ever uttered a racial epithet to someone in my lifetime."

Police confirm that Baldwin and Miller filed complaints against each other after the incident.

Baldwin has been tweeting about the incident, writing in one message, "That's kind of magical thinking, isn't it? The Post accusing me of racism?" The Post reports that Baldwin removed some of his earlier tweets about the incident, including one in which he reportedly twice called Miller a "crackhead."

Baldwin also tweeted, "I?find it ironic that my foundation's last grant was $50,000 to the Arthur Ashe Learning Center." Ashe, the only black tennis player ever to win the singles title at Wimbledon, the U.S. Open and the Australian Open, passed away in 1993.

Egypt court rejects election law, may delay poll

CAIRO (Reuters) - Egypt's constitutional court rejected five articles of a draft election law on Monday and sent the text back to the country's temporary legislature for redrafting in a ruling that may delay a parliamentary poll due in April.

"The court has returned the draft parliamentary electoral law to the Shura Council after making five observations on five articles which it found unconstitutional," a statement said.

The court said the election law was technically flawed and contradicted articles in the new constitution which the Shura council members themselves had drawn up.

The five articles the court highlighted involved limits on lawmakers' political affiliations, the ability of lawmakers to change their status from professionals to peasants, provisions for Egyptians to vote abroad and the division of constituencies.

The statement said the technical problems pertained to "the wording of the law" and "contradictions within the law".

"The report by the constitutional court on the electoral law reveals the level of professional weakness of the Shura council and the haste in which the new constitution was drawn up," said politician and former member of parliament Mostafa Naggar.

The liberal Wafd Party said "the Muslim Brotherhood has violated the constitution it drew up" and the Social Democratic Party hailed the constitutional court's statement.

A source in President Mohamed Mursi's office said before the decision that if the court found fault with the law, it could delay its passage, and hence the election, by a couple of weeks, but probably not months.

Mursi had been expected to promulgate the electoral law by February 25 and set a date two months later for voting, probably in more than one stage for different regions because of a shortage of judicial poll supervisors.

The constitutional court, made up partly of judges from ousted former President Hosni Mubarak's era, has intervened repeatedly in the transition, dissolving the Islamist-dominated parliament elected after the 2011 pro-democracy uprising.

Its composition was changed by the new constitution passed by a referendum in December.

The Freedom and Justice Party said it respected the court's decision, saying in a statement that prior scrutiny of the law was a guarantee of "the stability of the legislative institutions, and spared the country the negative effects of the dissolution of representative councils".

Mursi was criticized in October for issuing a decree giving himself powers to override the judiciary. He backed down and dropped the decree weeks later following widespread protests.

(AP) ? Perhaps there was one heartbreak too many for Mindy McCready.

The former country star appears to have taken her own life Sunday afternoon in Heber Springs, Ark. Authorities say McCready died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot to the head and an autopsy is planned. She was 37, the mother of two young sons.

If confirmed, it was at least her fourth suicide attempt since 2005, ending a series of tumultuous public events that marked much of the singer's adult life.

Speaking to The Associated Press in 2010, McCready smiled wryly while talking about the string of issues she'd dealt with over the last half-decade.

"It is a giant whirlwind of chaos all the time," she said of her life. "I call my life a beautiful mess and organized chaos. It's just always been like that. My entire life things have been attracted to me and vice versa that turn into chaotic nightmares or I create the chaos myself. I think that's really the life of a celebrity, of a big, huge, giant personality."

This time it seems the whirlwind overwhelmed McCready.

Her death comes a month after that of David Wilson, her longtime boyfriend and the father of her youngest son. He is believed to have shot himself on the same porch of the home they shared in the small wooded community of large lakefront houses about 65 miles north of Little Rock, Ark., and his death also was investigated as a suicide.

It was the most difficult moment in a life full of them. McCready issued a statement last month lamenting his death. And she called him her soul mate and a caregiver to her sons in an interview with NBC's "Today" show.

"I just keep telling myself that the more suffering that I go through, the greater character I'll have," she said, according to a transcript of the interview.

Like so many times before, McCready showed a little toughness in the midst of a personal storm, again endearing herself to her fans. But as usual, the brave face for the camera hid a much more complicated internal struggle that surfaced publicly time and again over the last 10 years.

This time, along with her remembrances of finding Wilson as he lay dying, she also answered questions about whether they'd argued earlier that evening about an affair and if she'd shot him.

"Oh, my God," the "Today" transcript reads. "No. Oh, my God. No. He was my life. We were each other's life."

It's unclear what circumstances led to McCready taking her own life, but it appears she was struggling again with twin issues that have persisted for years ? substance abuse and the custody of her children. She checked into court-ordered rehab and gave her children up to foster care earlier this month after her father asked a judge to intervene, saying she'd stopped taking care of herself and her sons and was abusing alcohol and prescription drugs.

It's not clear where her sons, 6-year-old Zander and infant Zayne, were Sunday.

A deputy stationed outside McCready's home Sunday night referred questions to the Cleburne County sheriff, who was unavailable. Yellow crime-scene tape cordoned off the front yard and a dark-colored pickup truck sat in the driveway.

News of McCready's death spread quickly Sunday night on Twitter, with major country stars paying their respects to the onetime Nashville darling.

"Too much tragedy to overcome. R.I.P Mindy McCready," wrote Natalie Maines of The Dixie Chicks.

And Carrie Underwood added: "I grew up listening to Mindy McCready...so sad for her family tonight. Many prayers are going out to them..."

Melinda Gayle McCready arrived in Nashville in 1994 still in her teens with tapes of her karaoke vocals and earned a recording contract with BNA Records. She had a few memorable moments professionally, scoring her first No. 1 hit almost immediately.

"Guys Do It All the Time," a self-assured dig at male chauvinism, endeared her to female fans in 1996. She also scored a hit with "Ten Thousand Angels," and her album of that title sold 2 million copies.

Beyond that, though, she's mostly remembered for a string of dramatic moments as she spent the next 15 years chasing another huge hit. Her problems included a custody battle with her mother over one of her sons, arrests, overdoses and discord in her love life.

She made headlines in April 2008 when she claimed a longtime relationship with baseball great Roger Clemens. Published reports at the time said she met the pitcher at a Florida karaoke bar when she was 15 and he was 28 and married. Clemens denied the relationship. A decade earlier she was engaged to actor Dean Cain, but the two never married.

She also had a turbulent relationship with Billy McKnight, a country singer who is the father of her oldest son. McKnight was arrested in 2005 on charges of attempted murder after authorities say he beat and choked her.

During this period she also pleaded guilty to obtaining the painkiller OxyContin fraudulently at a pharmacy and got probation. She violated the probation with a drunken driving arrest in May 2005, a few days before McKnight was arrested. And in July 2007, she was arrested in her hometown of Fort Myers, Fla., on misdemeanor charges of scratching her mother, Gayle Inge, on the face during a scuffle and resisting sheriff's deputies.

Less than a year later, McCready was arrested and charged with violating her probation by falsifying her community service records relating to the 2004 drug charge. A month later, she entered an extended care facility for undisclosed treatment, and followed that with a 60-day jail sentence. Inge took custody of Zander.

There were at least three suicide attempts between July 2005 and December 2008.

She tried to get help in an unusual way, joining the cast of "Celebrity Rehab 3" with Dr. Drew Pinsky. McCready came off as a sympathetic figure during the show's run. Pinsky called her an "angel" and in an interview in 2010 said it appeared McCready was doing "rather well."

Pinsky helped treat McCready for love addiction on the show and said he'd referred her to professionals who could continue to help her afterward.

"A love addict basically is somebody that really didn't have a good model for intimacy in their childhood, often times traumatized in one way or another, thereby intimacy becomes a risk place, becomes an intolerable place," Pinsky said. "And so what they tend to do is attach themselves to idealized, bigger than life, unavailable others, specifically go after some public figure that's married or go after some rock star who is himself a sex addict and not interested in a relationship, and then idealize that person and actively pursue them to the point of obsession."

McCready suffered a seizure in one of the show's scarier moments. Test showed she has suffered brain damage, something she attributed to her abusive relationship with McKnight.

McCready is the fifth celebrity to pass away since appearing on Pinsky's show and the third from Season 3. Alice in Chains bassist Mike Starr and "Real World" participant Joey Kovar both died due to overdose. In the months after her stint, she said she found some peace and told The Associated Press in early 2010 she hoped to get her career restarted, write a book about her experiences and begin production on a reality show with her brothers. She'd just met Wilson and talked openly about their relationship, though the producer and musician declined to speak on the record.

With a publicist, reporters, cameras, makeup artists and musicians swirling around her during a press day for her last album "I'm Still Here," McCready fended off questions about a sex tape and said she and Wilson started out as friends.

"And I've never had a relationship like that before where we started completely as friends," she said. "It turned into friends really caring about each other and then it turned into love and I've never had that happen before."

At the time, Pinsky thought the relationship was on the right track: "She's an easy person to like and to care about and we hope she does well," Pinsky said. "So far so good as far as I can tell."

McCready said her main goal in 2010 was to pull her family back together: "I would like my son back with me and for my brothers and I and he to be able to go and do this (TV reality show), and I think after that I will be a pretty happy girl."

The new album debuted at No. 71 and failed to gain radio airplay. McCready's plans never materialized and she soon was in legal trouble again, this time fighting for custody.

McCready took her older son from her mother, the boy's legal guardian, in late 2011. She fled to Arkansas without permission over what she called child abuse fears. Authorities eventually found McCready hiding in a home without permission and took the boy into custody.

She and Wilson had their son in April 2012.

Obama on buddies' golf weekend along Florida's Atlantic coast

PALM CITY, Florida | Sat Feb 16, 2013 6:01pm EST

PALM CITY, Florida (Reuters) - It's a buddies' weekend of golf for President Barack Obama at a private resort along Florida's Atlantic coast.

The president played with some Democratic donors and got instructional tips on Saturday from one of pro golf's best instructors, Butch Harmon, during his mini-vacation from the White House. Harmon once helped golf star Tiger Woods work on his game.

With his wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha away on a Colorado ski trip, Obama was in warmer climes after a week devoted to promoting the proposals he offered in his State of the Union speech on Tuesday.

On a breezy day, Obama golfed at the Floridian Yacht and Golf Club that runs along the St. Lucie River. Harmon rode along with him for a few holes to provide tips, a White House aide said.

Obama was joined for his round by the resort owner, Jim Crane, who owns the Houston Astros baseball team and is a Democratic donor. Also playing was lawyer Tony Chase of Houston, who hosted a campaign fundraiser at his home for Obama last year.

Others who played in the presidential group were U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, close Chicago friend Eric Whitaker and utility executive Milton Carroll, who has donated to Obama's presidential campaigns.

The resort has a golf course designed by golf great Gary Player and later redesigned by Tom Fazio. The Floridian was purchased in 2010 by Crane, who was the host of Obama's visit.

The president was staying at one of the resort's cottages. He is to return to Washington on Monday, which is the Presidents Day holiday.

Before his visit with the president, Harmon told Tim Rosaforte, a Golf Channel analyst who writes for Golf Digest, that Obama had requested a lesson through an aide.

"I've played golf with Ike, Nixon, Ford and President Bush 41," Harmon told Rosaforte, referring to former Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and George H.W. Bush. "I never played with President (Bill) Clinton. I met him in the Oval Office. It'll be interesting. I know the president is a real keen golfer. I'm looking forward to it."

Like many of his predecessors, Obama is an avid golfer. He frequently tees up at the courses at Joint Base Andrews near Washington with a group of friends.

Futures Movers: Oil holds above $97; natural-gas prices drop 4%

By Myra P. Saefong and Polya Lesova, MarketWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? Oil futures settled higher Thursday, holding above $97 a barrel after U.S. data showed a decline in weekly jobless claims, boosting the outlook for demand, but strength in the U.S. dollar kept a cap on gains.

Natural-gas futures dropped to a six-week low with traders disappointed over the size of last week?s fall in U.S. inventories.

Oil for March delivery /quotes/zigman/2291769 CLH3 +0.02% climbed 30 cents, or 0.3%, to settle at $97.31 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Business travel is back to prerecession levels, but road warriors can expect less legroom than before.

The contract added to gains after the Labor Department reported that weekly jobless claims dropped by 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 341,000, much more than expected. See: U.S. jobless claims sink 27,000 to 341,000.

?Weekly jobless claims came in much better than expected to lift the general mood,? said Matt Smith, commodity analyst at Schneider Electric in Louisville, Ky., in a note. But ?the mood in Europe is much more downbeat as updated GDP data out of both Germany and France came in worse than expected, highlighting a deepening recession.? See: German, French GDP contract by more than expected.

The March crude contract had hit an intraday low of $96.77 a barrel after data showed euro-zone gross domestic product contracted by 0.6% in the final three months of 2012, versus forecasts for a 0.4% drop.

The euro extended its slide versus the dollar.

The euro /quotes/zigman/4867933/sampled EURUSD -0.0444% extended a slide versus the dollar. A stronger dollar can undercut the value of commodities, such as oil, that are priced in the U.S. currency. See: Euro-zone GDP plunge stokes rate-cut expectations .

London-traded April Brent North Sea crude futures /quotes/zigman/2735833 UK:LCOJ3 +0.14% added 12 cents to settle at $118 a barrel, after a 13-cent advance Wednesday.

?Concerns over Middle East remained after the [United Nations] nuclear watchdog said it failed to reach a deal with Iran on investigating its nuclear program,? said Fawad Razaqzada, technical analyst at GFT Markets, in a note.

But with West Texas Intermediate crude traded on Nymex remaining below $98, ?the near-term outlook remains unclear,? he said. Once the price ?breaks through this barrier, then we could see a move toward $100 a barrel, while a break below $95 would pave the way for a move to the downside.?

Nymex crude-oil prices fell 50 cents on Wednesday after conflicting data on U.S. petroleum supplies and forecasts on global oil-demand growth. See: Oil slips; traders parse through conflicting data.

Elsewhere in the energy complex Thursday, gasoline futures were a standout, rallying by 3%. Data on gasoline supplies released this week showed unexpected declines.

March gasoline /quotes/zigman/2052322 RBH3 +0.45% tacked on 8 cents, for a rise of 2.7% to $3.12 a gallon, the highest level for a front-month contract since late September. March heating oil /quotes/zigman/2202749 HOH3 +0.0093% settled at $3.22 a gallon, up half a cent, or nearly 0.2%.

March natural gas /quotes/zigman/2294272 NGH13 +0.38% fell 14 cents, or 4.3%, to end at $3.16 per million British thermal units, its lowest since Jan. 9. Prices fell further after the EIA on Thursday reported a decline in U.S. inventories that was a bit less than expected.

Supplies fell by 157 billion cubic feet for the week ended Feb. 8, the EIA said. Analysts polled by Platts forecast a decline between 160 billion and 164 billion cubic feet. See: Natural-gas prices fall further after EIA data.

The government report ?suggests a further minor bearish shift in the background supply/demand balance, with modest bearish implications for the reports to follow,? said Tim Evans, an energy futures analyst at Citi Futures, in a note.

Santa Barbara, Calif. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) for before-and-after analysis, a team of researchers including a UC Santa Barbara graduate student discovered positive changes in brain activity in children with autism who received a particular type of behavioral therapy.

Work completed at Yale University's Child Study Center used fMRI as the tool for measuring the impact of Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) therapy pioneered at UCSB by Lynn Koegel, clinical director of the Koegel Autism Center on both lower- and higher-functioning children with autism receiving PRT for the first time. fMRI allows researchers to see what areas of the brain are active while processing certain stimuli in this case human motion. Comparing pre- and post-therapy data from the fMRI scans of their 5-year-old subjects, the researchers saw marked and remarkable changes in how the children were processing the stimuli. Findings from their study, "Neural Mechanisms of Improvements in Social Motivation After Pivotal Response Treatment," are published in a recent issue of the Journal of Autism and Developmental Disorders.

"The cool thing that we found was that these kids showed increased activation in regions of the brain utilized by typically developing kids," explained Avery C. Voos, first-year graduate student at the UCSB-based Koegel Autism Center, and one of the lead authors of the Yale study. "After four months of treatment, they're starting to use brain regions that typically developing kids are using to process social stimuli.

"We can say that we have shifted the way these children are processing low-level social stimuli, and that's what we want," she added. "There's a social deficit in autism, so any improvement toward social interaction really helps with development. That's what makes this very exciting, and it speaks to the promise and success of PRT."

A targeted technique meant to improve social engagement among children with autism spectrum disorders, PRT forgoes the focus on specific skills, like block-building, to concentrate instead on so-called "pivotal areas," such as motivation, in hopes of inducing a cascading effect with similar impact across multiple areas.

"For instance, if you're orienting to people, socially it may appear more acceptable, but you're also getting rich information from those people, which will affect the way you're interacting with people more broadly," Voos explained. "Say a child wants to draw, and asks for a red crayon while she has her back to me. I say, 'I can't understand what you're asking if you're not looking at me.' Once she orients toward me, we provide a contingent response in this case, giving her the red crayon and ideally she begins to understand, 'Hey, me looking at you and asking for what I want gets me what I want.' Ultimately, the social interaction becomes the reward on its own, which is the ultimate goal."

The Yale study involved two children, who each received the same amount of therapy eight to ten hours each week, for four months bookended by fMRIs looking at predetermined regions of the brain. Small by design, according to Voos, the project was meant to show that PRT does impact processing, and is not simply inspiring learned behavioral changes. It was also intended as impetus for further, more comprehensive study.

"The logical next step is to assess a larger group of children that are the same age as these two, to see whether these improvements were unique to these kids," Voos said. "We also want to know if the changes we saw remain after treatment. Long-term, it would be amazing to do this with hundreds of kids, in different age groups, to see what differences there may be. I would postulate that the younger we start these kids in treatment, the more improvement we will see in the way that they process social stimuli."

And therein lies the larger message of this study, according to Voos.

"Early intervention is wonderful," she said. "It can make serious improvements not only in overt behavior, but potentially in the way children are processing the world around them and the way they're processing your interaction with them on a daily basis. Even if they're only minor changes, the fact that they have those shifts, and are potentially processing social stimuli in a more 'typical' manner for the rest of their lives, is pretty powerful to think about."

"Traditional neuro-imagers will say you can't do MRI with single subjects," she acknowledged. "This is still giving us a lot of useful information. It might be a different way of using the technology, but we think it's beneficial. And we don't think these are random findings. They make sense to us, and it's exciting."

Voos's partners at Yale, in both the research and the recent publication, were Kevin A. Pelphrey, Jonathan Tirrell, Danielle Z. Bolling, Brent Vander Wyk, Martha D. Kaiser, James C. McPartland, Fred R. Volkmar, and Pamela Ventola. Her Yale colleagues are still running the study.

Voos recently applied for a training grant that she hopes will allow her to continue this work at UCSB.
