NAJAF, Iraq (AP) ? An Iraqi-American woman found bludgeoned to death in her California home last week, with a threatening note left beside her body, was buried in her native Iraq on Saturday. Family members wept uncontrollably by her graveside and her father asked God to exact revenge on those responsible for her death.

A relative called on Iraq's government to take quick action to press U.S. authorities to reveal the results of the investigation into the killing of Iraqi-born Shaima Alawadi.

A 32-year-old mother of five, Alawadi was found unconscious by her daughter Fatima, 17, in the dining room of the family's home in El Cajon, one of America's largest enclaves of Iraqi immigrants. Three days later, she was taken off life support.

No suspects have been identified or apprehended so far. California police have said the note had led investigators to regard the killing as a possible hate crime. Her daughter told a local TV station it read "Go back to your country, you terrorist."

The family brought Alawadi's body from the U.S. to the Shiite holy city of Najaf, south of the Iraqi capital Baghdad, Saturday on a plane sent by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

From the Najaf airport, two police cars escorted a pickup truck carrying the casket, draped in an Iraqi flag, to the "Valley of Peace," a large cemetery where many Shiites prefer to bury their dead. The cemetery is located close to the tomb of Imam Ali, a cousin of Islam's seventh century Prophet Muhammad and founder of the Shiite faith.

Mourners offered a prayer for Alawadi's soul at the tomb's mosque before they took her body into the cemetery for burial.

Relatives, including women clad in black, wept uncontrollably as they watched the burial. Alawadi's husband, Kassim Alhimidi, and daughter fainted as the body was lowered into the grave.

"Oh God, take revenge on those responsible," Alawadi's father, Nabil Alawadi, screamed in anguish. "We are shocked by this criminal act against my daughter who called for love and tolerance."

Haidar Alawadi, a relative, said the family was "totally surprised at the attitude of the Iraqi government," which he said has not taken any action in the case. "What we want is the truth about this ugly crime," he said.

But al-Maliki's media adviser, Ali al-Moussawi, told The Associated Press there was not much the government could do beyond urging U.S. authorities to "take every step needed to achieve justice, especially if this is related to hate crimes."

"Such crimes must be stopped," he added. "We have full trust in the U.S. justice system."

The victim and her family left Iraq in the early 1990s after a failed Shiite uprising against Saddam Hussein, who was ousted by a U.S.-led invasion in 2003. The family lived in refugee camps in neighboring Saudi Arabia before going to the United States. Saddam's troops had hanged Alawadi's uncle.

The family arrived in the Detroit area in 1993 and later moved to San Diego. Shaima Alawadi was a religious Shiite Muslim who wore a hijab and volunteered at the local mosque.

El Cajon police have declined to confirm the contents of the note but say it has led investigators to regard the killing as a possible hate crime. Chief James Redman said Monday there was other evidence and called the killing an isolated incident.

The FBI, which is assisting El Cajon police in the investigation, defines a hate crime as an offense motivated by a bias against race, religion, ethnicity, disability or sexual orientation.

HAVANA (AP) ? A leading Cuban dissident has identified the mystery man who yelled anti-government slogans just before a Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI this week before being hustled away by security agents.

Jose Daniel Ferrer told The Associated Press that the protester's name is Andres Carrion Alvarez, and identified him as a 38-year-old resident of the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba. Ferrer said the man was still in custody Friday.

The protester shouted "Down with the Revolution! Down with the dictatorship!" near journalists at the Mass at Santiago's crowded Revolution Plaza on Monday. Video of the incident showed him being hit by an apparent first-aid worker wearing a white T-shirt with a large red cross, before they were separated. Security agents quickly took him away.

Ferrer is the leader of the Patriotic Union of Cuba opposition group in Santiago. He says Carrion approached another member of the group in recent weeks and expressed interest in their activism.

"We were able to identify him this morning," Ferrer said, adding that two of his colleagues were trying to contact Carrion's family. Ferrer said Carrion was being held at the Versalles police station in the city. It was not clear if he had been charged with any crime.

The government has had no comment, but a spokesperson for Benedict said the pontiff was aware of the incident and concerned about the man's welfare.

"There was contact made to be informed about the person and his situation," the Rev. Federico Lombardi told journalists before the pope's departure Wednesday. "The interest was there and was manifested."

Benedict met with Cuban President Raul Castro and his brother Fidel during the three-day trip. He denounced the country's Marxist system as outmoded ahead of his arrival, and used homilies and speeches to urge greater freedom. He also criticized the 50-year-old U.S. economic embargo, which he said had caused unnecessary suffering.

The Santiago protester's identity had been a mystery to leading members of the island's small dissident community, with some taking to Twitter to try to find out more about him.

Elizardo Sanchez, who monitors human rights on the island and acts as a de facto spokesman for the opposition, said he had no idea who the man was. Cuba considers all the dissidents to be mercenaries paid by Washington to stir up trouble.

Sparking innovation in a small business isn?t just a matter of sitting around waiting for good ideas to pop into your CEO?s head. Innovation comes from a lot of places, and the right environment can turn all of your employees into idea generators.

Recently Karl Start and Bill Steward of Avondale Strategic Partners, a business advisory company, posted an article on Inc about reigniting innovation in a business (read it here). It was a great post that focused on getting ideas from the field ? customers and employees who spend time with customers. The three principal actions they proposed were:

Zimmerman accused of domestic violence, fighting with a police officer

Court documents obtained by msnbc.com on Tuesday evening show that George Zimmerman, who fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, went to court in 2005 and 2006 for accusations of domestic violence, tussling with a police officer and speeding.

The three incidents took place in Orange County, Fla.

• In 2005, Zimmerman, then 20, was arrested and charged with ?resisting officer with violence? and ?battery of law enforcement officer,? both which are third-degree felonies. The charge was reduced to ?resisting officer without violence? and then waived when he entered an alcohol education program. Contemporaneous accounts indicate he shoved an officer who was questioning a friend for alleged underage drinking at an Orange County bar.

• In August 2005, Zimmerman?s ex-fiancee, Veronica Zuazo, filed a civil motion for a restraining order alleging domestic violence. Zimmerman counterfiled for a restraining order against Zuazo. The competing claims were resolved with both restraining orders being granted.

• In December 2006, Zimmerman was charged with speeding. The case was dismissed when the officer failed to show up in court.

On Feb. 26, in Sanford, Fla., Zimmerman fatally shot Martin, who was unarmed. Zimmerman, 28, a neighborhood watch volunteer, told police that he shot in self-defense and that Martin attacked him, breaking his nose.

Outraged, Martin?s parents and their supporters have called for Zimmerman?s arrest. The case has drawn national attention and thousands have rallied across the country for Martin?s parents? cause.

Bill Lee, the Sanford police chief, has temporarily stepped down from his post. The FBI and Department of Justice and the state of Florida are investigating.

Zimmerman's attorney, Craig Sonner, did not immediately respond to an email seeking comment on the court appearances and his voicemail box was full.

LAS VEGAS (AP) ? Screaming "They're going to take us down!" a JetBlue pilot stormed through his plane rambling about a bomb and threats from Iraq Tuesday until passengers on the Las Vegas-bound flight tackled him to the ground just outside the cockpit, passengers said.

The captain of JetBlue Airways Flight 191 from New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport was taken to a hospital after suffering a "medical situation" on board that forced the co-pilot to take over the plane and land it in Amarillo, Texas, the airline said.

The unidentified pilot seemed disoriented, jittery and constantly sipped water when he first marched through the cabin, then began to rant about threats linked to Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan after crew members tried to calm him down in the back, passengers said.

"They're going to take us down. They're taking us down. They're going to take us down. Say the Lord's prayer. Say the Lord's prayer," the captain screamed, according to passenger Tony Antolino.

Josh Redick, who was sitting near the middle of the plane, said the captain seemed "irate" and was "spouting off about Afghanistan and souls and al-Qaida."

The outburst came weeks after an American Airlines flight attendant was taken off a plane for rambling about 9/11 and her fears the plane would crash. An aviation expert remembered only two or three cases in 40 years where a pilot had become mentally incapacitated during a flight.

Gabriel Schonzeit, who was sitting in the third row, said the captain said there could be a bomb on board the flight.

"He started screaming about al-Qaida and possibly a bomb on the plane and Iraq and Iran and about how we were all going down," Schonzeit told the Amarillo Globe-News.

The captain was tackled by several passengers after he tried to re-enter the cockpit, which had been locked by the co-pilot, the Federal Aviation Administration said in a statement.

Antolino, a security executive who said he sat in the 10th row, said he and three others pinned down the captain as he ran for the cockpit door and sat on him for about 20 minutes until the plane landed at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport at 10 a.m.

"A group of us just jumped up instinctually and grabbed him and put him to the ground," Antolino said after arriving in Las Vegas later Tuesday. "Clearly he had an emotional or mental type of breakdown."

An off-duty airline captain who was a passenger on the flight entered the flight deck before landing in Amarillo and took over the duties of the ill captain, the airline said in a statement.

The captain was taken to a local medical facility after the plane landed, the airline said without elaborating.

Shane Helton, 39, of Quinlan, Okla., said he saw emergency and security personnel coming on and off the plane as it sat on the tarmac in Amarillo.

"They pulled one guy out on a stretcher and put him in an ambulance," said Helton, who went to the airport with his fiancee to see one of her sons off as he joined the Navy.

Authorities interviewed each of the passengers once they had landed and left the plane, said 22-year-old passenger Grant Heppes, of New York City.

"I had no idea it was an employee until it really started happening," Heppes said. "I just assumed it was a passenger who flipped out."

The FBI was coordinating an investigation with the airport police, Amarillo police, the FAA and the Transportation Safety Administration, said agency spokeswoman Lydia Maese in Dallas. She declined to comment on arrests.

The flight left New York around 7 a.m. and was in the air for 3 ? hours before landing in Texas. The passengers boarded another plane for Las Vegas several hours later. That plane arrived in Las Vegas about two hours later.

John Cox, an aviation safety consultant and former airline pilot, said incidents in which pilots become mentally incapacitated during a flight are "pretty rare." He said he could only recall two or three other examples in the more than 40 years he has been following commercial aviation.

Airlines and the FAA strongly encourage pilots to assert themselves if they think safety is being jeopardized, even if it means contradicting a captain's orders, Cox said. Aviation safety experts have studied several cases where first officers deferred to more experienced captains with tragic results.

Unruly pilots and crew have disrupted flights in the past.

Earlier this month, an American Airlines flight attendant took over the public-address system on a flight bound for Chicago and spoke for 15 minutes about Sept. 11 and the safety of their plane, saying "I'm not responsible for this plane crashing," several passengers said.

Passengers wrestled the flight attendant into a seat while the plane was grounded at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport; the flight attendant was hospitalized.

In 2008, an Air Canada co-pilot was forcibly removed from a Toronto-to-London flight, restrained and sedated after having a mental breakdown on a flight. A flight attendant with flying experience helped the pilot safely make an emergency landing in Ireland, and none of the 146 passengers and nine crew members on board was injured.

In August 2010, JetBlue flight attendant Steven Slater pulled the emergency chute on a flight from Pittsburgh after it landed at John F. Kennedy International Airport. He went on the public-address system, swore at a passenger, grabbed a beer and slid down the tarmac.

He was sentenced to probation, counseling and substance abuse treatment for attempted criminal mischief.

The FAA is likely to review the unidentified captain's medical certificate ? essentially a seal of approval that the pilot is healthy. All pilots working for scheduled airlines must have a first-class medical certificate. The certificates must be renewed every six months to a year, depending on the pilot's age.

To receive the certificate, the pilot must receive a physical examination by an FAA-designated medical examiner that includes questions about pilot's psychological condition. Pilots are required to disclose all physical and psychological conditions and medications.

BROWN (US) ? Researchers have developed a breast implant with nanoscale bumps that appear to halt the regrowth of breast cancer cells while attracting healthy ones.

One in eight women in the United States will develop breast cancer. Of those, many will undergo surgery to remove the tumor and will require some kind of breast reconstruction afterward, often involving implants. Cancer is an elusive target, though, and malignant cells return for as many as one-fifth of women originally diagnosed.

In an effort to drive down the rate of relapse, biomedical scientists at Brown University used a common federally-approved polymer to create the implant that has a ?bed-of-nails? surface at the nanoscale (dimensions one-billionth of a meter, or 1/50,000th the width of a human hair) that deters cancer cells from dwelling and thriving. The implant causes a reduction in the blood-vessel architecture on which breast cancer tumors depend and draws healthy breast cells at the same time.

?We?ve created an (implant) surface with features that can at least decrease (cancerous) cell functions without having to use chemotherapeutics, radiation, or other processes to kill cancer cells,? says Thomas Webster, associate professor of engineering at Brown and the corresponding author on the paper, published in the journal Nanotechnology.

?It?s a surface that?s hospitable to healthy breast cells and less so for cancerous breast cells.?

Webster and his lab have been modifying various implant surfaces to promote the regeneration of bone, cartilage, skin, and other cells. In this work, he and Lijuan Zhang, a fourth-year graduate student in chemistry, sought to reshape an implant that could be used in breast reconstruction surgery that would not only attract healthy cells but also repel any lingering breast-cancer cells.

The duo created a cast on a glass plate using 23-nanometer-diameter polystyrene beads and polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA), a biodegradable polymer approved by the FDA and used widely in clinical settings, such as stitches.

The result: An implant whose surface was covered with adjoining, 23-nanometer-high pimples. The pair also created PLGA implant surfaces with 300-nanometer and 400-nanometer peaks for comparison.

In lab tests after one day, the 23-nanometer-peak surfaces showed a 15-percent decrease in the production of a protein (VEGF) upon which endothelial breast-cancer cells depend, compared to an implant surface with no surface modification. The 23-nanometer surface showed greater reduction in VEGF concentration when compared to the 300-nanometer and 400-nanometer-modified implants as well.

It?s unclear why the 23-nanoneter surface appears to work best at deterring breast-cancer cells. Webster thinks it may have to do something with the stiffness of malignant breast cells. When they come into contact with the bumpy surface, they are unable to fully wrap themselves around the rounded contours, depriving them of the ability to ingest the life-sustaining nutrients that permeate the surface. ?This is like a bed-of-nails surface to them,? he says.

?I would guess that surface peaks less than 23 nanometers would be even better,?Webster adds, although polystyrene beads with such dimensions don?t yet exist. ?The more you can push up that cancerous cell, the more you keep it from interacting with the surface.?

Webster and Zhang also found that the 23-nanometer semispherical surface yielded 15 percent more healthy endothelial breast cells compared to normal surface after one day of lab tests.

The pair next plan to investigate why the nanomodified surfaces deter malignant breast cells, to create surface features that yield greater results, and to determine whether other materials can be used.

The National Institutes of Health?s National Center for Research Resources and the Hermann Foundation funded the research. Michael Platek at the University of Rhode Island helped with the electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis.
