AutMont: Fall 2012 Parent Academy Workshops

MCPS has put out their Fall 2012 Parent Academy workshop schedule. As always, there are many good workshops to choose from. I've listed the information for those pertaining to the autism community below.

September 10, 7-8:30 pm: Help! My Child is Disorganized!?An expert from Your Life Simplified, Inc. will discuss the factors that may be contributing to your child's disorganization. You also will learn skills that you can teach your child to be organized for success in school. This workshop will be held at Kingsview Middle School (18909 Kingsview Road) in Germantown.

September 24, October 1, October 8, and October 15, 6:30-8:30 pm: Special Education: Parents as Advocates and the Family-School Partnership (4-part series)?Learn about the special education process and how to advocate for your child. Topics include the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, Individualize Education Program (IEP), resolving issues, community resources, and support. Learn, network, and share tips with other parents. This is a four-part series, with different topics at each session. All workshops will take place at Neelsville Middle School (11700 Neelsville Church Road) in Germantown.

October 3, 7-8:30 pm: Understanding ADHD?Learn about attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and explore strategies and interventions that support academic and social success. Presented by CHADD. The workshop will take place at Parkland Middle School (4610 West Frankfort Drive) in Rockville.

October 17, 7-8:30 pm: Effective Parent-Teacher Conferences (Presented in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Amharic, Vietnamese, and Korean)?Parent-teacher conferences are an important component of ongoing home-school communication and family engagement. Come learn tips and strategies to prepare for an effective parent-teacher conference. Presented in collaboration with the Division of ESOL. This workshop will take place at Gaithersburg Middle School (2 Teachers Way) in Gaithersburg.

October 25, 7-8:30 pm: Helping Kids Deal with Anger?Anger can help identify problems but not always solve them. This workshop will address ways parents can help their children recognize early warning signs and develop strategies for dealing with their anger in a positive way. Presented by YMCA Youth & Family Services. This workshop will take place at Westland Middle School (5511 Massachusetts Avenue) in Bethesda.

October 29, 7-8:30 pm: Effective Parent-Teacher Conferences (Presented in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, Amharic, Vietnamese, and Korean)?Parent-teacher conferences are an important component of ongoing home-school communication and family engagement. Come learn tips and strategies to prepare for an effective parent-teacher conference. Presented in collaboration with the Division of ESOL. This workshop will take place at?Sargent Shriver Elementary School (12518 Greenly Street) in Silver Spring.

November 15, 7-8:30 pm: Social Bullies: Dealing with Exclusion and Cliques?Today's students are using exclusion, rumors, and teasing to bully others. Come and explore these behaviors and discuss strategies for helping bullies, victims, and bystanders. Facilitated by YMCA Youth & Family Services. This workshop will take place at Francis Scott Key Middle School (910 Schindler Drive) in Silver Spring.
